This year we spent our winter holidays in Alpe d’Huez. We’ve have been there last year and loved it, so decided to come back again. We were not disappointed! Alpe d”Huez ski station is just perfect for us, as it is for most of the families, I believe. The slopes are great, with a large variety of difficulties and choice, even for the beginners. There is everything needed for kids, starting from the equipment, ski classes, ending with all different after ski activities.
We went there by car admiring the views along the way..
I must admit that we were extremely lucky to have 6 days of gorgeous weather – sun, almost no wind and great snow. No wonder that the station is also called “The Island in the Sunshine”!
After ski hiking…
We did dog sledging, nice experience, but better not to be 3 in the same sledge.. not really comfortable for 2 adults and a kid to be honest. Still, Sara loved it 😉
The Alpe d’Huez station is situated on a fully south-facing plateau at 1860 m, going up to 3300 m with Pic Blanc. From there on a fine day, you can see 1/5e of France, which we did! It was a bit cold out there, but worth the view, really. We even saw the top of Mont Blanc!
On the way down we have stopped to visit an Ice Cave with amazing sculptures made from snow and ice.
We have stayed at Pierre et Vacances, les Bergers. We’ve been there last year too and found it extremely practical. The hotel is just across the road of the ski slopes and the ESF, French ski school. However, there is a multitude of possibilities for a nice stay, including all the beautiful wooden mountain chalets.
There was a new slope opened this year, called Marcel’s farm, with a lot of fun sculptures, tunnels and slaloms for kids. For sure it was one of Sara’s favorite!
Traditionally, during schools holidays, there is a day of the show that ends with a beautiful ride with lanterns done by all ski teachers. This year it was illuminated with the French flag colors, really spectacular to see.
Pitty it was only a week, we wished we could stay a bit longer… The most important, almost forgot, Sara got her 2nd Star, well done & congrats! Next year, we will aim for the 3rd Star! 😉
